GRADE IS A SPECIFICATION
Value starts with knowing the limits.
Possible characteristics include knots, wane, blue stain, mixed lengths, cosmetic defects and lower visual grade. These terms do not make every B-grade lot equivalent. Agree permissible defects, moisture, usable yield and inspection criteria before procurement. Unacceptable defects must be defined in writing, including the treatment of rot, insect damage and excessive splits. Structural performance must never be inferred from a visual trade description.
